How many of you attend a knit or stitch meeting? Do you attend once a week, month, or other? I do not attend a knitting meet up outside of my home. It is not that I haven’t tried. I just love knitting at home more than visiting and chatting (and a little knitting) at someone elses home. Having said that, I have been thinking about ways to “visit” with other knitters, face to face, without having to leave the comfort of my own home.
Then it hit me. I have a google (gmail) account and a webcam. That is all I need! See, gmail is free, and they have recently added a video portion to their chat (gtalk) window. It works great and best of all, is free!!!
So, here is the idea…
I would like to set a date and time that some of us could get “together” on video chat and visit. All those who participate will be able to see everyone else who is participating. We will be able to knit (or whatever) while visiting because we won’t have to be typing, like in regular chat. Everyone will have access to their own knitting stuff, their own coffee, food, etc…
If it works out, then we could “meet” at regular intervals (to be determined later).
I know there are several other ways of doing this same thing. There are several sites that you can log in to in order to accomplish this same type of thing. But, I thought I would try it through gtalk first to see how many of you are interested and then we can go from there.
All you need is a computer, a webcam, and a willingness to have some fun and try something new. If you are interested, let me know via email at: nautical.knitter@gmail.com. I think I will probably limit the group to about 5 or so at first to see how it goes. Come on, you know you wanna…

He is warm!!
On the Dog’s on Thursday front, here is a photo of the progress that Blazer has made in accepting Elf this week. Not the greatest view of Blazer, but I took what I could get while they were cooperating. I can’t believe we have had her a week and a half already!
Oooooo, that is *such* a cool idea! I won’t be able to play (yet) – we just have dialup at home, and we’re not allowed video uplink devices at work. Drat! But maybe this is the year we’ll get an actual home internet connection….
Hmmm…I didn’t know that gmail had this feature! I’ve been participating in the Ravelry Virtual Knit and Spin, and I’m having a great time! The downer is that we’ve had some problems with the video sites we’ve tried (Stickam and Skype). Skype is a bit limiting as far as video goes.
Anyhow, I would love to have the opportunity to participate in another virtual chat as well! I don’t have a yarn store close to me, so I don’t get to attending IRL knit nights.
That is a precious, precious photo. I take it Blazer isn’t accepting this little one too well? g
sounds like a cool idea! I’ve never tried my cam or gtalk. if I can figure that part out, I’d be game for it….Daytime, EST, sometime into January.
Elf and Blazer are too cute.
I’m sooooo there! I can’t wait!
Sounds fun. I was recently gifted a Web Cam, can’t think of a better use for it!
I’ve got a GMail account already if one is needed.
There is a Tuesday night group that meets at the local Barnes & Nobles. I go when I can or when work has not drained me.
